disgusted and weigh in

I can not believe how sick I've been. It's been over a week and I'm still not back to normal....

I decided to forgo my weigh in Friday since I haven't been eating and I KNOW I've lost weight. I'm sure it is coming back on now that I'm eating more and I don't want to get all hung up on numbers since I've probably lost at least 5 lbs in the last week.

Being home sick, I've had the misfortune of turning to TV as entertainment. Being such a foodie, Food Network was on in the background a lot. Oh My God. It was really disgusting to watch a lot of the programming. Now, I've always tuned into some of their programming, but rarely to Paula Deen or Drive Ins and Dives or whatever that sick program is called.

Paula Deen made a sandwich called The Fat Darrell. This disgusting mound of deep fried death contained not only a HUGE white roll, but deep fried chicken wings, deep fried french fries and deep fried mozzarella sticks. I literally sat there with my mouth hanging open in HORROR that anyone would eat something like that, let alone have the audacity to act like it was something amazing.

*Cue my best infomercial voice*

... but wait, there's MORE!

We all need a substantial breakfast.

Why have a healthy green shake when you can indulge in the Sausage Pancake Egg Sandwich?

Filled straight from the slaughterhouse you too can enjoy eggs, butter, cheese and sausage on top of a white flour pancake! Make sure you smother that baby up with more butter to top it off! Yee=Hawwww. Now I ain't seen a breakfast like that since I left Iowaaaa baby. That there local Maid Rite served the belly up and pig out. Sheeeeiiiittt.

Let's move onto the red faced Guy Fieri. This amazing show allows us to watch our host rove around America looking for oil! Not be to confused with petrol, the grease on this show all ends up in his stomach. He allows the viewers an intimate look inside his mouth as he is chewing the deep fried flesh of the much ignored factory farmed animals that pollute the plates and palates of many proud Americans. Guy devours that deep fried cheeseburger and still manages to speak. Talk about mutli-tasking!!

*end infomercial voice*

.. I could go on and on.. but I won't. I am just disgusted by what I've seen.

Too much time on my hands for sure.

I've barely taken any pics of food... but when I got my appetite back I was craving some heavy duty nutrition, so I made this soup. It had a lot of onion, garlic, kale along with 1 large sweet potato, fire roasted tomatoes and 1/4 cup lentils for the entire pot. I also used a lot of dried red pepper flakes and finished it off with umeboshi vinegar. I topped each bowl with a huge amount of nutritional yeast and a tiny bit of olive oil. I don't usually want this much nooch, but my body must need the B vitamins and protein right now. I've been eating this pot of soup for the last 3 days.

Just broccoli and some mustard/garlic/flax vinaigrette dressing..

I've also been eating bananas and pears and oranges.
I will be cooking soon as I'm finally getting some energy back..

It is so strange for me not to have an appetite. It's kind of cool that I've been able to listen to my body so well..

also, I've been drinking lots of hot water with lemon juice, stevia, cayenne, apple cider vingear and honey. (I know many vegans don't use honey.. I personally don't have a problem with it).. and lots of tension tamer tea along with miso soup with ginger, garlic and hot peppers.

  1. I'm sorry to hear you have been ill. =( It happens to the best of us!

I rarely sit through entire cooking shows because it always involves roasting, baking, frying, etc. some huge piece of meat. And it's rarely ever healthful. The world needs some vegetarian cooks on TV!

Your soup looks delicious. One thing I like about getting sick is that when you can eat substantial food again, it tastes 100 times better than before!

  2. So sorry to hear you've been sick for so long! That is no fun at all. Hopefully your healthy soup and all the fruits and hot water will help.

Food Network is ridiculous. I used to be a big fan but have all but stopped watching it now. They just have nothing to offer a vegetarian, much less a vegan!!

  3. That sandwich sounds absolutely disgusting. Paula Deen is forever finding ways to further disgust me. And I can't stand her voice either.

Isn't it fantastic to listen to your body?

  4. Being sick is no fun!!! I hope you are feeling better now, and I'm so sorry you had to sit through the shows about all those disgusting meat-y dishes :o(

Your soup looks and sounds SO much better than Paula Dean's sandwich!

    *Sending good thoughts your way*

  5. Being sick is never any fun. I hope you feel better soon.

And it seems that any time there is a healthy food show on that network, it is canceled.

  6. Sorry to hear you are still sick. I think this season has been awful for colds and flu's. Hopefully this is will your one cold for the season.

You know, Paula Deen is the Devil. I can't BELIEVE she would promote that heart diease/stroke sandwich! And did you see you make the chicken tenders with freakin' LARD. Who does that now a days!!!

I hope you get to feeling better soon!

I laughed out loud on your commentary about Paula Deen. She does make some of the most fattening foods and the way she eats it is what makes me kind of snarl up my face in disgust. Have you ever heard her say that she needs a minute alone with her food? Yikes!! I haven't seen the episode that you talked about, but that sandwich sounds gross even to me. Your soup that you made looked really good!! :))

I just wanted to tell you how offended I am at this post. Granted, the sandwich you mentioned sounded very unhealthy. However, I tend to think of vegans/vegetarians as unbiased and caring human beings. Your rant sounded childish and ridiculous. There is no reason to watch these shows you speak of. If you do not like what you are seeing, change the channel. I understand that you have beliefs and I respect that and your choices in what you eat. I feel that as a mature individual you should show others the same respect. Your beliefs are honorable and your attitude and actions should be so as well. I love your blog and I am meat eater. I would never undermine your choices or your beliefs. Please don't undermine mine.

  9. Sorry to hear you are sick :( It seems like everyone around me has been sick this month...hopefully, I'm not next! eek.

I totally agree about Food Network. I really just hate TV in general. We haven't had one for over a year and we are loving it!

It's funny you mentioned "Guy," though. Matt and I just got back from going out of town and before bed we were really excited to watch Food Network-but, that bleached blonde idiot was on allll night! Is it just me, or is he always cramming food into his mouth? Gross.

Anyway, glad you are back to blogging...I just love reading your posts.

  10. Paula Dean also shared the Krispy Creme Bread pudding complete with fruit cocktail. Ick!

  11. Goodness. Food network is awful. ( I still find myself watching it frequently though...) Paula Dean once made deep fried cheese cake - cheesecake and chocolate chip inside of a egg roll wrapper and deep fried. Sick.

I was watching Rachel Ray once, and she made a sandwich of french toast, two meats, two cheese, mayo, mustard, and cranberry sauce. Of corse at the beginning of the show it says she is making healthy meals.

  12. sucks yr so sick. you crack me up though!

  13. I hope you get well soon. Your soup looks very healing.

I often marvel that Ms. Deen is still alive. I saw her fry a piece of cheezy lasagna once.

  14. What a bummer! I am so sorry you are still under the weather. I hope you are back on your feet and in your kitchen quick. I think your soup looks great!

We watch food network quite often. Even omni hubby is grossed out at the amount of pork fat and other disgusting stuff they cook with. It is really fun to try and figure out how to veganize their recipes.

  15. oh dear, PLEASE get well soon Mel!! I was quite ill last week, so I know what you're going through - hang in there, get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids, and taking comfort in knowing that your source of nourishment is HEALTHY and DELICIOUS - not artery-clogging and revolting like those Fat Darrel sandwiches and whatnot :0)

  16. Oh, I do hope that you're on the mend and start feeling better soon! I laughed throughout the entire Food Network review though. I can only watch those shows for so long until funny becomes disgusting and then I start yelling at the TV and then I know it's time to change the channel. =)

  17. I hope you'er better by now, Melody. Being sick stinks.

I have mixed feelings about the Food Network. I automatically translate to vegan in order to not break down in tears at the horror of it all. I like to watch people cook--but like you, am always appalled and the public's lack of information or even concern about where and how the meat got to their plates.

  18. Paula Deen is her own special kind of crazy.

(Glad to hear you're on the mend!)

  19. It sucks that you've been sick, and it sucks even harder that Food Network revolves around deep fryers.

At least it seems to have strengthened your resolve to eat better!

  20. Hope you're feeling better Melody and that the soup worked!

  21. Anon,

If you feel offended by this post, then maybe you should look within yourself.

Maybe there is a part of you that knows eating factory farmed deep fried death doesn't really sit well with you?

Are the type of meat eater who likes the G rated version? Do you like the way it tastes, but not how it gets to the table? Do you prefer to goto the store and buy your meat in a neat little package and leave it at that?

Have you even bothered to watch Meet Your Meat or other videos of the REAL day to day lives of factory farmed animals, or do you eat meat because you LIKE IT and keep your head in the sand of the realities of how it came to your table?

I make no apologies for the way I feel about Factory Farming and eating animals in MY VEGAN BLOG.

I suggest some inward contemplation on your part here to see WHY the post offended you so much.

I don't and never will respect your views on eating animals. I just won't.

That doesn't mean that I hate you or even think you are a bad person.

Hell, I would even go out to lunch with you and you could eat whatever you wanted without me batting an eye.

I just wish that people could lose the disconnect between the suffering of animals and what tastes good on their plates and I will not keep my thoughts to myself in my own blog.

This is a vegan blog and I most likely will continue on with some rants now and then and if that offends you, too bad.

  22. I'm sorry you're not feeling well. I hope you're feeling better soon. I used to love Food Network when I had cable but I think they've gone a little over the edge with a few of their shows now.

Soup is what I always have when I'm not feeling well and it miraculously always makes me feel better.

    Hope your feeling better soon,

  23. Wow, those paula deen recipes are gross. really really gross.

  24. Anonymous10:06 AM

You make a good point. I often do not think about where the meat I eat came from. I admit that I apply a disconnect when it comes to the meat I eat. You are right. This is your blog and you can say whatever your would like to say.

  25. So sorry you've been so sick. It's a bad season for sickness, this year.

That soup you made looks really delicious.

  26. I am in the process of making the transition to a vegetarian lifestyle. I know that I'm on the right track now because I wasn't at all excited by Paula's sandwiches however reading about your soup makes my mouth water!!!

  27. Hi Melody!!!

Sorry that you aren't feeling well- but sounds like that soup will get you well.

Not sure if you read my last post on reiki, but I have another reiki (healing energy workshop) coming up where I learn how to send healing energy across long distance. Maybe you might be interested in receiving?

    Feel better soon my friend!

    Hate those Food Network shows...

  28. Anonymous11:28 AM

You have some nice recipes. I am not vegan or even a vegetarian...I do like meat in moderation. I love veggies, though, and especially love hummus. I can't wait to try the jalapeno hummus. I have made avocado, spinach & artichoke, and roasted red pepper hummus. I love them all. I actually like food network, because it gives me great ideas for recipes (some with mods and some not). I only eat unhealthy foods in moderation. I try to buy foods where I know where they are from (my parents farm and friends farms). Everything in moderation is a good thing. I am so thankful for the beautiful earth and abundance of fruits, veggies, grains, dairy, and meat (yes, meat).

  29. Anonymous11:29 AM

It is a shame that you are sick so often. I wonder if it is because of your diet. Your recipes look delicious, though.
