Day 15 RAW good and bad

I am such a major blogger slacker! I only have two pics to show you... but they do pretty much encompass a lot of what I've been eating. First, above is sun dried tomato marinara with fresh basil, garlic and kalamata olives.I drizzled a bit of olive oil over the top, but made the sauce fat free. I am not limiting my fats, but since I'm eating so many nuts I think it's better to chill a bit with the oil. I think I'd rather get my fats in whole foods than oil anyway.
Big ass salad. yeah.. I eat tons of these.This one had lentil and alfalfa sprouts, avocado, sun dried tomatoes, tomato, lettuce, cukes and a greek dressing.

I made some pretty tasty cashew cheese and then dehydrated it. I'll probably photograph that soon... I'm also still working on the perfect bread and cracker recipe. I haven't been happy with anything yet. It's all OK for a few bites, but then I hate it... and yes.. I said hate as in turns my stomach hate.


Soooo.... that's the good news I guess. Now the bad.

I HATE this diet! I am over my hunger issues and my cravings don't really bother me that much... but I am just bored and even more, I feel like crap!

I have serious leg cramps that wake me up.. charley horses...
My hair is falling out...
I have several big bruises and I don't usually bruise at all..

I'm also BITCHY!
My attention span has been shortened.. it's hard for me to sit and read a book..

I'm still going to do this.. I am 1/4 the way there!

I have learned a lot and I am breaking the cycle of eating for comfort which is HUGE! (no pun intended),..
I haven't weighed myself, but several people have said they think I may be losing. I'll weigh in on Aug. 1st.

I'll probably have a handful of almonds and some dates for dinner.

I( am VERY underwhelmed by my dehydrator. So far, it seems everything I make in it tastes the same and that is nasty.

I definitely don't think you need a dehydrator in order to go raw..

Vita Mix is a HUGE plus though.

I am still drinking at least a quart of green smoothies and they save my sanity.

Now.. I am hoping I can catch up with all your blogs!


  1. So sorry to hear about those nasty side effects! But you may find that they clear up entirely before your time is up.

    My biggest problem when I went raw (for a month) was that I was basically too lazy to do all the prep required for yummy, interesting food every day, so I got bored with it and felt hungry a lot of the time. But I did feel terrific otherwise.

    And I agree about the dehydrator--in my zeal at first, I went out and got a 9-tray Excalibur; I ended up selling it last year (and my new electronic stove has digital temperature control, so I can put it down to 115 anyway).

    I'm really impressed with your determination--keep at it! Looking forward to hearing how it all turns out.

  2. I'm so sorry that you're experiencing so many negative side effects. I really hope that you start feeling better soon.
    And thanks for the tip about the dehydrator! I've thought about buying one, but I wasn't sure if it was worth the money. You've helped me to decide, so thanks!

  3. What a drag that it's so not fun for you, but I can understand how it would be "too much" after a while. Like Ricki said, though, you will probably see these side affects go before your raw diet is over. I commend you for being so determined and motivated despite all the difficulties!

    And thanks for the dehydrator tip- I try to do a raw day a week and always feel like I'm missing out without one. Good to know I'm not!

  4. Sorry to read that it's been a rough experience... About the charley horses--they're often due to a lack of potassium and/or sodium. Making sure you getting some sea salt & celery (or celery juice) can help with the sodium on raw, and bananas & papayas are great for potassium. I know how much charley horses hurt... I used to get them in the middle of the night after a really hard hill run. Ugh. Anyway, take good care of yourself. 100% raw takes some real will power, but if you decide to stick with it, I know you can do it! Whatever you decide, I know you'll do what's right and best FOR YOU.

  6. Your efforts are admirable. Just be true to what your body is telling you. Look at today as a raw day and try not to focus on the raw challenge as a whole. It may help you reach that point where your body is over the side effects. The goal is to feel better and not worse, so be gentle with yourself. You are a success for trying and accomplishing everything that you have so far. I'm sorry you are going through some hard times with this. I hope you feel better soon.

  9. I am so sorry you are not loving the diet and not feeling that great! Make sure to listen to your body...please don't hurt yourself just to accomplish the goal!

    I love the look of the sprouts on your salad...I have tried sprouting a few times with no success. I would love to see/hear about your process and how you do it!

    I don't think following a diet that's making you feel sick is a very good idea. I'm encouraging you to quit before you hurt yourself or at least easing up on being totally raw. Maybe eating all uncooked fruits and veggies instead?

  12. I'm sorry you're bored. I think I would be too! 15 days (now 17) of eating nothing but raw seems almost incomprehensible to me!

    On the dehydrator note, I made some Flax Crackers last week that I thought were totally yummy! I couldn't stay out of them. If you haven't tried making flax crackers yet, you should. There's a recipe posted on my blog for them...it's an adaptation of one I found online.

  13. Oooh, doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun! Hair falling out can be due to stress as well as diet, but with diet it is usually an essential fatty acid deficiency - maybe increase your avocados, flax seeds, and walnuts? Also, carb deficiency can contribute to mood swings, bitchiness and brain fog, so maybe eat more grains (can you even eat grains on raw??). Also, I think it is important to listen to your body, don't push it too hard. You might be experiencing some detox symptoms with the bruising and muscle cramping, but keep an eye on it - could be something more too.

  14. Those two photos look stunning! I also ate a lot of huge salads when I experimented with raw. I had the same reaction you describe to the breads and crackers I tried to make in the food dehydrator- the first bite was interesting, subsequent bites were "EW! FLAXY!" Good luck with everything you're doing- as long as you're listening to your body, there is no wrong diet.

    Those dishes looked really tasty..especially the salad. Man if this raw thing is making you sick, do you really want to keep doing it? Hair falling out and leg cramps would stop it for me.

    What is that first dish with the marinara sitting on. I guess I can't place the vegetable.

  16. Sorry to hear you;'re not felling so hot. It's so commendable what you're doing, I would never have the willpower.

    Sending a virtual ((((hug))) and lamenting the fact that I don't eat as much raw as I should.

    (I thought about getting a dehydrator, but since I have no room, it was that or a juicer. I opted for the juicer. Glad I did from what you say)

    I don't mean to state the obvious, but don't you think maybe your body is trying to tell you something? I mean hair loss? Severe leg cramping? Irritability? That does not sound like a happy, healthy body to me. I have visited this blog on several occasions and quite frankly, thought you were smarter than this. And I wonder at the people leaving messages egging you on and encouraging you to continue. Personally, I found your previous diet to be very healthy and clearly more agreeable to your physiology. Just be careful.
