I am not being authentic.

As many of you know, I am moving to Boston!

Basically, I am changing everything in my life pretty much 100% which I am super excited about, but also a bit nervous.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my blog and what exactly I want to do with it..  You see, I don’t really feel connected to it in a way that I used to.  Things change so much in life.  When I started this blog in 2006, I was married and cooking for my family.  I have divorced and my sons are grown now.

I took a couple years off from blogging and worked my ass off as a chef in restaurants… and the last thing I wanted to do when I came home was cook, write or think about food!..  Fast forward to a year ago when I realized I was DONE working for others in the capacity I had been doing.  While I LOVE vegan food.. I have not had a particularly positive experience working for vegan establishments or other “health food” type places.  When I was the Chef at the Wine Bar, I had to handle/cook meat…

When I realized I wanted to start working for myself in 2010, I came back to blogging and wow!  Things changed in the good ole blogosphere.  There were HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of vegan blogs..   I began sharing my $3.33 a Day recipes and re-connecting with my old favorite bloggers.. and have made new blogging friends in the process… but something is missing…

.. And that something is ME.  I don’t feel like I am being really authentic here… and it’s a chore to only present a side of myself (that is creating yummy vegan food) when there is so much more that is going on in my head…

I have been feeling dead inside for a long time.

I don’t talk about this much because frankly, I have used this blog in a professional sense..  and don’t want to get too personal… AND… when I have opened up personally here, I tend to attract the CRAZY who spam my inbox with hateful words.

..but I’ve decided that this blog is going to be for ME..  and I don’t care how I come across.  I don’t care what sort of hate mail I get. Ignore and Delete!

I am going to start sharing all of me.. my passions, my struggles…

Basically, I am re-claiming my blog.

I am still going to post Frugal Vegan Food!..  I’m not sure if I will be able to maintain the $3.33 a Day budget since food prices are rapidly increasing. (I saw a pound of DRY bean jump in price from $.99 to $2.38 in the past WEEK!!!)

Part of WHY I am moving to Boston is to pursue my photography.. so I expect that will be part of this blog too…  I will probably be shopping for food almost daily… and will bring my camera along of course!

Once a week, I am going to go out to eat and critique a restaurant..  100% honesty.  I will hold NOTHING back and I am VERY hard to please…  I realize this…  and while I know I have HIGH standards…  I am OK with that and hold others to the same standards.  Since I have worked in restaurants, I KNOW that creating awesome vegan food can be done.. and I also know that we all have our bad days… so any restaurant that has a bad review will get another chance.

I will frequent both traditional and vegan/vegetarian restaurants.

I officially move October 1st, but am in the slow process between living between two homes at this moment.. so expect my blog to really pick up in October!

  1. You're not kidding when you say that the blogosphere has changed. I commend you for knowing yourself and loving yourself enough to do whatever works best for you and really look forward to getting to know whatever parts of yourself you choose to put here!

You inspire me, I have been toying with a revamp of my own blog. It's nice to see a favorite blogger 'of old' just going for it and doing the same!

    much love and happy moving!

  2. Melody, you're an amazing person, I've read your blog since the early days and I'm still reading it for your ingenuity, honesty and humour. I'm impressed you've decided to reclaim the blog - blogging can sooooo easily morph into a case of satisfying your readership rather than staying true to your original aims, I should know! - and I for one am looking forward to the restaurant reviews and snapshot of your changing life as you move to Boston. Ignore the crazies and the trolls, they'll soon go back to their caves, I wish you all the best for the future and look forward to the changing face of Melomeals! DJ x

  3. I think that's awesome! I think you need to blog for you, and whoever wants to join the ride - they are welcome!!

I went from writing a dairy free blog to a blog about living life (dairy free!!) and it's great. Almost like a diary of sorts!! :)

Congrats on your reclaimed blog! I look forward to reading it!

  4. Life is ever changing and we have to change with it. I hope you continue to help me and others with Vegan thoughts, ideas, recipes and yourself. I've only recently turned vegan and I'm still learning and struggling. It's because of my daughter that I'm changing...

  7. I'm so glad you're sticking around! I've had a bit of a falling out with my blog and I am waiting for the right moment to just dive back in. Hopefully it comes soon!

Congrats on the move and I can't wait to hear more!

I'm a pretty hard one to please when it comes to food myself, so I look forward to hearing your reviews! =)

  8. By all means PLEASE BE TRUE FACED. Its only when you show the world who you really are that we can love you and care for you the way you need it. And I know this is the internet, but its also 2011 and the internet is oftentimes where community is created. Thank you for taking the risk and opening up yourself to the world.

  9. Hey Melody --

Right on! I've been following you on your blog and facebook for ages, though I am, I guess, in that 99% of blog readers who don't comment much. Anyway, I've always been inspired and delighted by your online stuff, and I'm sure becoming more true will only make it better. (You probably don't even realize how much of you has come through between the lines in the past...).

Anyway, I wanted to say that I'm a vegan living in Boston I know you're not coming from far away, but if you need anything in terms of orientation or suggestions, feel free to get in touch! Or, maybe we can grab lunch sometime and compare restaurant notes! Congrats on everything.

  10. Awesome, I spelled my own name wrong! But I also wanted to say, that I'm a designer/photographer and am somewhat hooked into those scenes here (and the dog scene!), so if you need any suggestions, just ask!

  11. Congratulations on taking the next step in your personal journey. I have seriously enjoyed your blog posts the past several months, so thank you for all you've done here in such a selfless and giving way. As a relatively new vegan-wannabe, you have been very helpful.

Whatever the next phase of the blog becomes, I wish you well and thank you for allowing this stranger a glimpse into your world.

  14. Lives change, people change, and blogs do, too. I really look forward to your new blog, including your honest restaurant reviews. I am encouraging of an vegan venture, but if I'm really truthful, not all of them are serving the best vegan eating has to offer. So, your reviews will help me seek out special experiences. And what's up with the sudden increase in food prices??? I lost the contents of a big fridge/freezer plus full upright freezer in the hurricane last week. Restocking is giving me serious sticker shock!

  25. A blog is definitely an evolution of a person. When I look back on my blog from almost 2 years ago, I laugh at some of the ingredients I was using and the ugly photography! But I know that it's a diary and a true accounting of my journey. And that's what it should be for all bloggers. Who wants to follow someone faking it? I'm so happy for you!

  26. Yay for reclaiming your blog! I can relate to a lot of what you are saying and especially to how everything has changed over the last couple of years. When I went vegan four years ago, your blog was one of the first ones I read and I missed it when you were on hiatus. Do whatever you want, it's your blog <3

  27. Good job Mel!! Way to reclaim your blog and your life!! I am not 100% vegan or vegetarian. But I enjoy a plant based diet and your blog is THE BEST VEGAN BLOG I have seen. You use a high volume of vegetables and healthy sweets and the presentation of your food is beautiful which is important to me. Plus my carnivorous husband enjoys a lot of your food because your food texture is smooth and...normal. He loves that and I love that he loves it. Thank you so much for providing affordable, healthy, attractive and satisifying entrés on your blog. I am excited to learn more of your passions and dreams and enjoy your life and writings from a distance!!
    Sending love and gratitude!!

  28. I think you should follow your intuition here... I'm just glad you're not quitting, because I think you're a neat person, and I value your words. You've already created such a bulk of valuable frugan posts in what you've contributed already that I would still come to read again even if nothing new were added. I do hope that you follow through with the ebook you hinted at on facebook.
    Thanks for writing!
