"Eat More Plants" - Melody Polakow
i feel ya, girl. menopause sucks. praying you get your foot issues fixed and hang in there!
Big hugs, Melody! You are very brave for sharing and I admire your focus.
Is black cohosh one of the natural supplements you're trying? Quite some years ago (like, 20) when my mom was going through menopause, that was THE herb to be taking. . . Not sure where it stands now. Also, have you ever tried intermittent fasting? It's supposed to be good for fat loss. I just started doing this (it's basically just eating in a short wondow of time every day) because I have a HUGE problem with night eating. I've found "setting" my "feeding time" is REALLY helping me get rid of that problem. It's only been one week, BUT I haven't had a nighttime snack, yet. I've seen IF "feeding times" range anywhere from 5-12 hours. I do 8 hours right now (12-8PM) but would really like to cut down to 7, and, ideally 6 hours. So far, I love it; it may be something that works for you. One more thing, I'm not sure how you feel about eating non-dairy or non-ovo animal products, but I find gelatin to be a great protein source. I make little "fruit gummies" with it and eat about TB worth of gelatin from them everyday. (It's been awesome for my tendinosis.)Good luck with everything, Melody! Keep us updated, okay? :)
Thanks.. I started taking Black Cohosh 5 days ago and I really think it's starting to help... I'm not personally comfortable with the gelatin thing, but thanks for the suggestion, I'm glad it's helping you.. :-)
I know how much you like your spicy foods, but it can be a trigger that increases hot flashes. :( So can smoking, alcohol, caffeine and stress. I'm guessing you are under a LOT of stress lately. Black cohosh, vitex, dong quai, wild yam,and sarsaparilla are all hormone balancers. You might want to try progesterone cream with phytoestrogens from your health food store. To get your stress under control, try passionflower or ashwagandha. I've even heard flax oil can help with hot flashes as it has natural phytoestrogens, too. Hope something can help. I'm 53 and haven't gone through menopause yet. I definitely have been doing research on it, though. The only real symptom I've had is an increase in anxiety and stress. L-theanine with a good b-complex has helped that some. Hang in there! You have a support group here (I will never be a skinny vegan).
yeah, the stress really is not helping.. I do have ashwagandha.. and I'm taking black cohosh, natural progesterone cream, estrogen cream, eating 2 tbsp of flax meal a day .. and I'm going to start sprouting red clover... and I'm seeing some improvement..
I wish you'd cut yourself some slack! I totally understand why you're frustrated -- I too have regained lost pounds and continue to struggle with weight -- but beating yourself up and stooping to having your boyfriend weigh you daily is just adding additional, and completely unnecessary, stress. Despite the mugging and all your health issues -- none of which your fault in any way, shape or form -- you've still managed to keep off most of the weight you lost after moving to Boston. That's f'ing AMAZING. I think it's great that you want to be proactive about your weight BUT I hope you step back a bit and appreciate everything that's good in your life -- you weigh almost 100 pounds less than you did at your peak, you have two healthy kids, a man who loves you -- instead of just focusing on just one less-than-perfect aspect of your life. You are so much more than just a number on a scale. This is an excerpt from a book called FIT FROM WITHIN that really resonates with me, and I hope it does likewise with you ~ "Get clear on this: Being fat is not disgusting. Child abuse is disgusting. Tying up a dog outside all day and night in every kind of weather is disgusting. Overweight is a state. A situation. An inconvenience certainly. A threat to health in many cases. A sign, perhaps, of self-indulgence or indifference or emotional distress. But not disgusting."Sending your good thoughts!!
Wow.. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.. I really needed to hear this... I am actually feeling MUCH better about things... we went away for a lovely weekend in NH .. The Boyfriend has a friend with a lovely lakehouse and I relaxed and had a wonderful time .. and then I get this awesome comment and my brain in on a much different wavelength today.
Yay, I'm so happy to hear you're in better spirits!
I just wanted to say how much I admire you for taking some tremendously HUGE steps to change your life. I can't even imagine making the major life changes you did in order to improve your health. You've had some setbacks - none of which are really in your control. Life isn't static. Now you have to deal with a new set of circumstances. Don't rest on your laurels, but be proud of all the amazing things you've done, and use that to rebuild your confidence in yourself.
Yeah...doing the vegan menopause myself right now. I have been where you are right now and know how hard it is to lose weight when you are hormonally compromised. I was big for my whole life till my mum died in January last year and I decided that I really didn't want to die early like she did. I adore bread, starches and decided that the only way I was going to lose weight was to stop eating them cold turkey. Consider potatoes and bread crack cocaine to me and that's what I did. I have hormonal problems as well but I managed to lose weight. I know that walking is most definately part of the equation and it sucks that you can't walk and I can see how frustrated you are. Sharing makes it at least feel a bit like you are taking control and we are all here with you. You would be incredibly surprised to know how many of us there are out here Mel. Can you work with weights? Talking about upper body here as muscle burns a shite load more calories than sedentary stuff and I was losing weight hand over fist when I weight trained (didn't keep doing it though, too hard to keep going). Please know that we are all here in the same mindspace and know that what you are going through isn't unique. Feel free to vent whenever you like and there isn't anything wrong with tofu ;). Have you tried using that natural yam cream that you rub onto your inner elbow progesterone cream stuff (can't for the life of me remember what it is called)? That worked amazingly well for me years ago :).
